Ask the Expert
(September 23, 2007) —
Question: How do I prepare my child, physically and
mentally, for the rigors of a contact sport? Answer:
Mentally, make sure children understand why they are
doing what they are doing in training or practice,
whether it be a conditioning drill or a skill technique.
It's not just because "the coach says so." When children
are not understanding something, tell them to be
patient. Each child develops at a different rate, so
just make sure they're putting forth an honest effort
and reinforce small gains. Physically, put time in the
gym and make sure to prepare them by following a proper
training program. Make the most of their training time,
and train with movements that incorporate functionality,
explosiveness, strength, balance, reaction, vision and
stamina. Train hard, but keep it safe. Coach Dom Arioli
of Rochester runs the ROC Boxing and Fitness Center and
has coached youth boxing for 25 years.
